Getting unstuck

You've hit a wall. Here's the sequence that usually works.

Every student hits stuck. The moves that usually work, in order:

  1. Re-read the task. You'd be amazed how often the answer is in the question.
  2. Try the smallest possible version. If you can't build the whole thing, build the tiniest piece that works. Grow from there.
  3. Paste the error verbatim. Don't retype it or summarize. Copy the exact text into the familiar.
  4. Ask the familiar what you're missing. Sometimes the best prompt is "I'm stuck. Here's what I've tried. What am I not seeing?"
  5. Check the dictionary. The term you don't know is often the thing blocking you.
  6. Step away. Five minutes doing something else often surfaces the answer.
  7. Ask a human. Mentor, teacher, Mosaic community — use them. Some problems are social, not technical.
